Delete files and folders
Delete files or folders safely and use the brief Undo offered for selected files.
Delete files or folders when the work is no longer needed. Check the selection and keep a copy before confirming.
Before you delete
Delete one file
- Open the file's action menu.
- Choose Delete, or Delete file in the viewer.
- Review the file name and warning.
- Choose Delete File.
The file leaves Files and any client view that included it. A public link to the file stops working.
Delete selected files
- Select the files in the Files list.
- Choose Delete selected files from the selection toolbar.
- Check the selection and confirm Delete Files. For one selected file, the button says Delete File.
After deletion, the success notice can offer Undo for eight seconds. Select it right away to restore that batch. This brief Undo applies to the selected-file action; it is not a general restore option for earlier deletions.
If some files could not be deleted, the notice shows the count. Those files stay selected so you can check their access and retry them.
Delete a folder
- Open the folder's action menu.
- Choose Delete Folder.
- Review the folder name and warning.
- Choose Delete Folder in the confirmation.
The folder and all its contents leave Files. Folder deletion has no Undo action.
Who can delete files and folders?
Team members can delete items they can manage. A client with Full Access can delete files and folders in that folder. View Only access allows viewing and downloading.
Folder access can differ by person. Check the client's access if Delete is missing.
What your client sees
A deleted item disappears from the client portal. Its public link stops working too. Using the brief bulk Undo restores the files when the restore succeeds. Client access still follows the folder's rules.
Fix a common problem
Delete is unavailable: check your role and the folder's access settings. Remove View Only files from a bulk selection before deleting other files.
The wrong selected files were deleted: use Undo while the success notice offers it. If it is gone, check a downloaded copy or your team's backup.
The wrong individual file or folder was deleted: check a downloaded copy or your team's backup. The individual action has no restore option.
Some files stayed in the list: check the failure count and the selected files' access. Retry only the files that remain selected.
